Daily Life
Family Life
The people of Ancient Egypt highly valued family life. The parents treasured their children and regarded them as a blessing. In lower class families, the mother raised the children. The slaves and servants helped take care of children by attending to their daily needs. If a couple had no children, they would pray to the gods and goddesses for help. They would place letters at the tombs of dead relatives asking them to convince the gods. Magic was also used as an attempt to have children. In event that a couple still could not have a child, adoption was also an option. Wives of the men where usually staying at home all day cooking and taking care of the kids.

- Around the ages 8 and 12, peasant girls were usually getting married, but most of the time the boys seemed to be older than the girls. The girls that lived in richer families where married when they where. Most of the time, woman didn't have their rights and the parents used to choose who would be married. It was rare for the Egyptians to choose who they wanted to marry. Today, hopefully every man should have one wife, but back at this time Pharaohs would have several wives which today would be cruel. The couple will sign a agreement before getting married. The couple has to make a pre-nuptial agreement before they get married. Like today, the contract that the couple agree on has some requirements before getting married.
- At this time, you where able to divorce but, it wasn't common. For the wife, if the husband was to abuse her or hurt her she would be able to tell her parents about the situation. The parents of the woman would most of the time, try to help the boy by trying to change him. But, if the boy didn't listen to them or would uncooperative, they would create a divorce. At this time, divorce was easy and quick so it wouldn't be very hard to get out of the situation. Although divorce was hard to work on, trying to remarry wasn't as hard to accomplish.

At this time, the where many leaders that helped civilize Ancient Egypt. One of the leaders where Pharaoh Khufu. There where a couple ways people would describe him so we don't really know if he was a good leader or not. One of his descriptions say that he was very strict and a leader with a cruel heart who wanted to be counted as one of the gods. But, other people describe him a strict but a good and nice leader which was able to understand the people. One thing that we do know about Pharaoh Khufu is that he was the creator of The Great Pyramid of Giza. This is what he created, we don't exactly know how him and his workers actually created the pyramids because the blocks where about 10 tons of weight. But, they believe papyrus was involved.
The other leader was Hatsheput. He was actually a female pharaoh but, she never wanted to act like one. She would always dress and act like a man so she wouldn't be represented as a female pharaoh because at this time females weren't known or honored because of their gender. Hatsheput was a great pharaoh but, she was always dressed with a beard and male clothes. |
